Discover the Beauty of Osaka

See beloved landmarks in and around Osaka as you tour ancient temples, shrines and more in Mt. Koya and Kyoto.

About Your Trip

Embrace ancient and modern Japan as you journey through Osaka — and beyond — starting with a tour of Mt. Koya region. There you’ll see the beautiful Kongobuji Temple and the lovely gilded sliding doors with detailed paintings of cranes, plums and willows. You’ll also stop at Okunoin, the famous site of the mausoleum for Kobo Daishi, considered an iconic grand master for Buddhist teachings.

The next day, get ready for a full-day adventure in Kyoto. You’ll start with a visit to the impressive Fushimi Inari Shrine, where a mystical path lined with vermilion torii gates leads to a sacred mountain. Then, you’ll participate in a fun-filled wagashi-making (ornate Japanese sweets) class with tea. End your day in the Arashiyama district, where you’ll discover its awe-inspiring bamboo grove.

In your free time, why not visit Osaka Castle? Surrounded by cherry trees, gardens, moats and stone walls, this notable site comprises 13 ancient structures that are considered Important Cultural Properties by the government, including Otemon Gate, Sengan Turret and a gun powder storehouse.

What we love:
• Mt. Koya is known as one of the 3 holiest mountains in Japan due to its abundance of religious buildings.
• A popular purchase by tourists visiting Japan is an omiyage, typically a special boxed food item; different from a souvenir, the omiyage is given as a gift rather than kept as a memento.
• A Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice, Fushimi Inari Taisha is one of Japan’s top attractions, famed for its 10,000 colorful gates leading through the woods to sacred Mt. Inari.

Destination

Situated in the Kansai region, Osaka is the second-smallest prefecture in Japan, but it boasts the country’s third-largest population. Surrounded by the Tokyo mountains and Osaka Bay, its natural scenery and unique culture are key ingredients to the city’s economic success. Popular attractions include Osaka Castle, numerous temples and shrines, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, and the National Museum of Art, Osaka. Historically a merchant city, Osaka earned its name as the “nation’s kitchen” for serving as a rice-trading center during the Edo period. Its world-famous cuisine includes takoyaki (fried octopus), udon (noodle dish), traditional oshizushi (pressed sushi) and more. The city is also known for its fine sake, made with freshwater from the prefecture’s mountains. Osaka is home to more than 35,000 wholesale and resale shops, mostly located in Chuo and Kita, 2 of the city’s 24 wards.
