Winter Festival Fun in Pyeongchang

Winter Festival Fun in Pyeongchang

At 2 snow-themed festivals, you’ll celebrate the season in style — with ice fishing, strawberry picking, ice sculptures & more!

About Your Trip

The 2018 Winter Olympic Games may be over in South Korea, but there’s still plenty of fun and festivities to be had in Pyeongchang. Bundle up the family and get ready for thrills and chills at 2 winter festivals that make the most of the snowy season.

At Pyeongchang Trout Festival, try your hand at catching trout from a hole drilled in ice. During cold weather, the Odaecheon river freezes and the festival organizers add trout every day, so your chances are good. Place the line of the fishing rod into the hole and wait patiently. When you feel a tug, pull it out, perhaps with a fish! If so, release it back into the water or keep it for later. Finish the day riding down the hills on tubes or sleds. The next day, venture to Daegwallyeong Snow Festival in the “Alps of Korea.” While there, roam through the ice sculpture park and admire frozen works of art. It’s a winter wonderland for all to enjoy!

The following day is all yours to discover your favorite destinations in Seoul at your own pace. If you love shopping, Seoul is the place for you! The city is full of vibrant markets selling items of all kinds — meat, seafood, gadgets, clothing, souvenirs and much more.

What we love:

• On the way to Pyeongchang Trout Festival, stop for a sweet treat where you’ll fill a container full of fresh strawberries.
• While ice fishing, catch as many trout as you can and then return them to the lake or cook them on one of the grills set up along the river banks (please note: there may be an additional fee).
• How does a plain block of ice turn into something spectacular? Almost like magic, highly skilled sculptors carve ice into all kinds of designs to be displayed at winter festivals for all to admire.

Destination

Seoul, South Korea, is an energetic destination where pop culture, fashion and nightlife thrive. It’s among the most largely populated and technologically advanced cities in the world, with wireless access available virtually everywhere. Along with its modern appeal, Seoul embraces its rich heritage. There’s no shortage of historical landmarks and ancient architecture, and throughout the capital city’s 100-plus museums, visitors can find an enormous array of national relics. Distinctive regional dishes include seolleongtang, an ox-bone soup; rice cakes known as tteok; and pyeonsu, or vegetable dumplings.

Home to elegant slopes and idyllic surroundings, it's no wonder that Pyeongchang was the site of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The region is a popular spot for skiers and snowboarders looking for fresh powder in a scenic setting, but this county offers more than mountains. Visitors can view the many Buddhist temples, sip locally sourced rice wine and delight in the region's finest delicacy, hwangtae-gui. Pyeongchang is well known for another culinary delight, chilled noodles made of buckwheat, also called naengmyeon. This token dish is served in many different varieties with a broad range of sauces, so no two versions are the same.
